Everything that is old is ancient, and not described as antique is old. It could have been made yesterday in the style of an antique. Then it would be "properly", described as an old style floor lamp.

Boulton’s instinct for collecting has taken her to antique fairs and junk shops on both sides of the Atlantic (she takes an annual holiday to New York after Glyndebourne ends). And the sense of theatricality in the flat has been enhanced with props and mementos left over from various productions that she has worked on. Propped up against one wall is a painted wooden no flirting sign scavenged from an English National Opera production of The Mikado. Elsewhere a glittery bracelet dating from the 1940s takes pride of place, discarded after a ballet performance. ‘I like to think of it as borrowed from the Bolshoi,’ she says with a laugh.
